Similar to how Apple releases software updates for the iPhone, app developers regularly update their applications with new features and bug fixes. These updates are critical to ensuring iPhone applications keep running as smoothly as possible, but unfortunately, knowing how to download/install these updates isn't immediately apparent.

No matter who's reading this, it's safe to say that apps are a critical part of the iPhone experience. It's a lot of fun to talk about processor speed, display technology, battery life, etc., but at the end of the day, all of that comes together so people can use their favorite apps. Downloading an app from the App Store is pretty self-explanatory, but once that app is downloaded and on someone's device, it's crucial to ensure it's running the latest software version available.

For a lot of folks, the easiest way to do this is to enable automatic updates. This will have the iPhone automatically download new updates as they become available, allowing people to have this run in the background and not actively think about it. To enable automatic updates, Apple says to open the Settings app, scroll down, tap 'App Store,' and make sure the 'App Updates' toggle at the top of the screen is enabled. If it is, updates should automatically download and install whenever new ones become available.

How To Update iPhone Apps Manually

While automatic iPhone updates are great in theory, the fact of the matter is that they don't always work. Even with the feature enabled correctly, many iPhone users complain about apps still not updating for one reason or another. To fix this, users will need to update their apps manually. Open the App Store, tap the profile icon in the top-right corner, scroll down on the page until the circle at the top starts spinning, and then let go of the screen. This does a manual check for any available updates, and within a second or two, the page is refreshed. From there, tap the 'Update All' button to download all of the available updates.

Manually updating iPhone apps is a pretty painless experience. That said, it's likely not something people want to bother doing multiple times per day. As a general rule of thumb, it's wise to check for available updates at least once per day — typically in the evening once app developers have had a chance to roll out updates they've been working on. There's no harm in manually updating apps only every other day or even once per week, but doing a nightly check will get those important updates downloaded more often (and prevent someone from being faced with 100+ app updates if they keep putting it off). And that's all there is to it! Turn on automatic app updates, do manual checks for them, and that iPhone will continue to offer the best app experience possible.
